Part of the spectacular collection of museums and memorials on the National Mall, this soaring white obelisk Monument is dedicated to the country's first president: George Washington. One of the most striking features of the city, the Washington Monument in DC offers a fantastic view of the surrounding area, along with Ranger Talks and guided tours. Planning on visiting the Washington Monument? Please note that the structure is currently closed for repairs following a 2011 earthquake, but you can still admire it as you stroll along the mall.

Inspired by the obelisks of Ancient Egypt, this four-sided tower features a pointed top and is made of marble, granite and bluestone gneiss. The tower tapers towards the top and is surrounded by a circular colonnade.

Monument Dedication

The monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885 in front of 800 people. It was the tallest building in the world until the Eiffel Tower was constructed in Paris in 1889.
