Richard L. Hasen - Election Meltdown: Dirty Tricks, Distrust, and the Threat to American Democracy —

In this incisive analysis, Hasen, Chancellor's Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, and one of National Law Journal's 100 most influential lawyers, looks back at the elections of 2016 and 2018 to identify the reasons for the growing distrust of the American electoral system. Using detailed examples, he shows that doubt about the integrity of the process has arisen due to Republicans' use of voter suppression as a tool to depress turnout of likely Democratic voters; incompetence in election administration, chiefly in Democratic-led cities; dirty tricks, such as foreign and domestic misinformation campaigns; and inflammatory rhetoric from hardcore partisans. Hasen will be in conversation with Pam Fessler, an NPR correspondent who covers poverty and philanthropy.
