Myra Sklarew - A Survivor Named Trauma: Holocaust Memory in Lithuania

Sklarew's new book combines Holocaust studies, Jewish history, personal memoir, neuroscience, and neuropsychology to investigate the nature of trauma and memory as they relate to the Holocaust in Lithuania. Sklarew, professor emerita at American University, winner of the National Jewish Book Council Award in Poetry, and a descendent of people from Lithuania visited the country many times over the course of some twenty-five years. Her moving and insightful account draws on interviews with survivors, witnesses, rescuers, and collaborators, as well as their descendants and family members, to illuminate questions such as how we behave under threat, how we remember extreme danger, how subsequent generations—of perpetrators, victims, and witnesses—deal with their histories, and the effect of a traumatic past on people unaware of their origins.
