Jessica Stern - My War Criminal: Personal Encounters with an Architect of Genocide — in conversation

Family

A leading expert on terrorism, Stern, who served on President Clinton's National Security Council staff, engaged in extensive discussions with religious extremists for Terrorism in the Name of God. For her new book, an investigation into the nature of evildoing, she conducted interviews with Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serb convicted war criminal. Meeting with Karadzic in his Hague cell between October 2014 and November 2016, Stern delved into questions of what motivates one to violate ethical norms and international law. Observing herself as much as her subject, Stern in her unsettling report illuminates the complicated psychology of a man who retains the seductive charm of a magnetic leader. Stern will be in conversation with Susan Glasser, a Politico editor and author of The New Yorker's "Trump's Washington" column.
