DC Ride for The Living

EducationEvery year, the JCC Krakow sponsors the Ride for the Living - a multi-day celebration of the resurgence of Jewish life in Krakow, with the highlight being a 55-mile bike ride from Auschwitz-Birkenau to JCC Krakow. As not everyone who would like to participate in Ride For The Living is able to go to Poland, JCC Krakow is partnering with Jewish groups across North America to offer a Satellite Ride For The Living program around the United States and Canada. In Washington, DC, 3GDC - Grandchildren of Holocaust Survivors, DC Jews on Bikes, and the Sixth and I Community Service Collective is organizing the satellite ride. On Sunday, June 30, join us for an 18-mile ride around DC to show support for our Polish brethren and as a memorial to the fallen and tribute to the survivors. After the ride, we will break for lunch and educational programming. Not a rider? No problem. You can join us afterwards for food and drink and to take part in the discussion. For safety reasons, we are only releasing the final location to registrants. The original Ride was inspired by Robert Desmond, who rode his bicycle 1,350 miles (2,180 km) from London to Auschwitz, visiting WWII sites of liberation along his journey. After learning about the rebirth of Krakow's Jewish community, Robert realized his ride should not have ended in a place of loss, but rather at a place of hope - JCC Krakow. He then decided on finishing his ride, cycling from Auschwitz to the JCC Krakow, joined by members of the local Jewish community and friends from around the world. The ride is free. If you are interested in supporting any related causes, you can donate to the JCC Krakow or to Kavod - Ensuring Dignity for Holocaust Survivors. Any questions? Please email matthew@3gdc.org or dcjewsonbikes@gmail.com Note on safety and liability: Because this is a community-organized and lay-led event, every rider is responsible for his or her own safety and the organizers - DC Jews on Bikes, 3GDC, and the Sixth & I Community Serv
