Adam Hochschild - Rebel Cinderella: From Rags to Riches to Radical, the Epic Journey of Rose Pastor

Largely forgotten today, Rose Harriet Pastor Stokes (1879-1933) made waves nearly as soon as she arrived in this country from Russia in 1903. Having worked in factories since age eleven, in 1905 she astonished New York society by marrying the Episcopal millionaire James Graham Phelps Stokes. The couple went on to make headlines by joining the Socialist Party and working with figures such as Emma Goldman, Eugene V. Debs, and W.E.B. Du Bois. A leader in the fights for labor and women's rights, Stokes led strikes and distributed information about abortion. In 1919 she became a founding member of the American Communist Party and was pronounced "one of the dangerous influences of the country" by President Wilson. In this vivid account of her life and work, Hochschild, author of books including the classic King Leopold's Ghost, again demonstrates his mastery of historical narrative.
